A Research Collaboration Announced in 2019
In May 2019, Carnegie Mellon University and YiXue Education Inc. announced a multiyear research collaboration focused on adaptive K–12 education. Carnegie Mellon’s announcement identifies YiXue as the company using the Squirrel AI Learning brand.
The collaboration established the CMU–Squirrel AI Research Lab on Personalized Education at Scale. This archive story revisits the original announcement and the research questions behind it.
Connecting AI and the Learning Sciences
The announced work brought together artificial intelligence, machine learning, cognitive science, and human-computer interaction. Carnegie Mellon named Tom Mitchell and Ken Koedinger as the lab’s directors.
That combination reflects an important question for adaptive education: how can a system respond to an individual learner while remaining grounded in how people learn? Personalization involves decisions about what to present, when to offer support, and how to interpret a learner’s responses.
Carnegie Mellon’s Human-Computer Interaction Institute describes learning sciences as an area that studies learning and develops technology to support it. Its research brings together perspectives on people, instructional environments, and the design of learning tools.
Why Personalized Education at Scale Matters
The lab’s name captures two challenges that need to be considered together. Personalization asks how instruction can respond to different learners. Scale asks how an approach can serve many learners while still paying attention to those differences.
For families and educators exploring AI learning, this is a useful way to frame the topic. A feature is only one part of the picture; the learning experience, the support around it, and the evidence used to evaluate it also matter.
The 2019 announcement records the collaboration’s goals at that time. It provides historical context for Squirrel Ai Learning’s interest in research-informed adaptive education.
